Thirst

I drank, on my hands and knees

Not with depth, but with greed.

As if I had never drank

As if the world were under a mile of sand

And suddenly the sky broke.

When the rain finally ceased

My lips were mud without the sea,

Cracked and bloody– I was drunk

With new sensation. Thirst worse than before–

Before a brush with sustaining wonder.
